Shaping Tomorrow: Why Compassion is the "Invisible Fuel" of Youth
Education Beyond Academics: How Youmanity is Transforming Student Wellbeing Through Creative Compassion.
Shaping Tomorrow: Why Compassion is the "Invisible Fuel" of Youth
What drives a teenager to succeed? At the "Falcone e Borsellino-Carelli" Institute, a groundbreaking initiative by Youmanity has identified the answer: Compassion. From Life Lessons to Social Change The project, titled The Invisible Fuel, stems from the lifelong commitment of Youmanity’s founder, Angelo Iudice. Drawing from 25 years in crime prevention and a transformative personal experience in London—where the selfless compassion of strangers provided a lifeline when he was most vulnerable—Iudice has brought a vital message to the classroom: Social inclusion begins with empathy.
The Methodology of Empathy
To move beyond abstract concepts, the project utilized a rigorous five-step pedagogical framework:
Storytelling: Using real-life narratives to ground the concept of compassion.
Reflection: Students authored personal essays, diving deep into their own emotional landscapes.
Synthesis: Group discussions to identify shared values and "key descriptors" of kindness.
Creation: The collective translation of these values into a digital cartoon, serving as a permanent memento of their journey.
Documentation: A professional portrait session with Nico Nardomarino, capturing the authentic faces of 15 students alongside their personal definitions of compassion.
Building Resilient Communities
By addressing the lack of positive role models and the risks of social exclusion, The Invisible Fuel provides students with the emotional tools to resist negative influences. This work is the heartbeat of Youmanity’s mission as a registered charity: using art to foster a sense of belonging and love.
As the lights dimmed in the Aula Magna for the premiere of the student-led cartoon, the silence of the 13-year-old audience spoke volumes. It was the sound of a generation recognizing that their true power lies not in their appearance, but in the "Invisible Fuel" they carry within.
"We have witnessed a profound shift in how our students perceive themselves and others," noted Dr. Flora Gesumina Marasciulo, School Principal. "The success of this collaboration ensures that Youmanity will remain a key partner in our educational journey next year."
Youmanity extends its deepest gratitude to Prof. Rosa Pepe, Lead for the prevention of bullying/cyberbullying, for her invaluable assistance during the group discussions and the production of the digital cartoon (below). Thanks to the parents of our student authors for their trust and collaboration. Last but not least, Dr. Flora Gesumina Marasciulo and Prof. Gaetana Seveso, respectively the School Principal and the Assistant to the Principal, at the "Falcone e Borsellino-Carelli" Institute, Conversano, Italy.
