The Invisible Fuel – Nurturing Empathy in the Classroom
Visualising Empathy: How Fine Art Portraiture and Professional Storytelling Transformed a School Workshop into a Landmark Study on Youth Compassion.
The Invisible Fuel – Nurturing Empathy in the Classroom
Overview
"The Invisible Fuel" is an innovative educational initiative by Youmanity, designed to equip young teenagers with the emotional tools necessary to navigate the complexities of modern life. Developed at the "Falcone e Borsellino-Carelli" Institute in Conversano, the project explores the concept of Compassion—not as an abstract theory, but as a practical "fuel" for resilience, self-love, and social inclusion.
Aims and Objectives
The primary goal of the project was to silence the "inner critic" that often leads to social isolation and anxiety in youth. The journey was structured around three core pillars:
Narrative Discovery: Using real-life storytelling (Angelo Iudice, Puglia-London-Puglia) to ground the concept of empathy.
Reflective Writing: Encouraging students to explore their own emotional landscapes through personal essays.
Creative Synthesis: Translating collective findings into a digital cartoon, creating a lasting memento of their growth.
Making the Invisible "Visible": The Nardomarino Collaboration
To elevate the project and give a voice to its participants, Youmanity is proud to announce an extraordinary collaboration with Nico Nardomarino, a photographer with decades of experience in fine art portraiture.
Nardomarino’s professional input has allowed "The Invisible Fuel" to become truly visible. By stripping away digital filters and social pretenses, he has captured the authentic portraits of 15 students who courageously volunteered to lend their faces to the cause.

The premiere of the Invisible Fuel took place in the Aula Magna of the Carelli Institute on 30th March 2026
The Faces of Compassion Exhibition
This collaboration has transformed a school workshop into a powerful artistic study. Each of the 15 portraits is accompanied by a unique quote from the student, offering their personal definition of what Compassion means in today's world.
Where to see the work:
Online: A digital rollout across Youmanity’s social media channels.
On-site: A dedicated photography exhibition, currently being planned for the Carelli Institute, allowing the student community to witness the profound emotional maturity of its youth.
Through the lens of Maestro Nardomarino, "The Invisible Fuel" ceases to be hidden; it becomes a striking testament to the power of empathy in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
Youmanity extends its deepest gratitude to Nico Nardomarino, Studio Reportage, Prof. Rosa Pepe, Lead for the prevention of bullying/cyberbullying, for her invaluable assistance during the group discussions and the production of the digital cartoon (below). Thanks to the parents of our student authors for their trust and collaboration. Last but not least, Dr. Flora Gesumina Marasciulo and Prof. Gaetana Seveso, respectively the School Principal and the Assistant to the Principal, at the "Falcone e Borsellino-Carelli" Institute, Conversano, Italy.
