The Invisible Fuel: the Grand Finale
From Personal Resilience to Collective Art: A Journey into the Heart of Emotional Intelligence at the "Falcone e Borsellino-Carelli" Institute.
The atmosphere in the Aula Magna of the "Falcone e Borsellino-Carelli" Institute was electric. As the shutters were drawn, a hush fell over the audience. The air became charged with a sense of anticipation. This was the premiere of "The Invisible Fuel," a digital cartoon born from a unique collaboration between students and Youmanity.
A Five-Stage Journey into Compassion
The project was far more than a single event; it was a structured educational journey consisting of five intensive group discussions designed to help students explore and internalise the subject of Compassion.
The journey began with a deeply personal story from the founder of Youmanity, Angelo Iudice. He shared a pivotal moment from his youth in London when in 1981, having exhausted his emergency money, he was rescued by a couple whose selfless compassion changed the course of his life. "Had it not been for their kindness, I would not be here today to speak with you," Angelo told the students, defining compassion not as a theory, but as a practical, life-saving force.
From Essays to Animation
Following this introduction, the students were tasked with writing personal essays on what compassion meant to them. These writings became the raw material for the workshop. Together, the group discussed the essays, extrapolating the key words and expressions that best captured their collective understanding of the concept.
To ensure these ideas did not remain "just words" on a page, the students then translated their findings into the digital cartoon. This creative process allowed them to practice compassion through collaboration, resulting in a visual memento that will remain with them as a reminder of their shared growth.
The Roots of Youmanity
This pedagogical approach stems from Angelo’s 25-year career in crime prevention. Having researched youth crime and the lack of positive role models, Angelo saw firsthand how social exclusion could lead to a life of crime. Youmanity was founded as a registered charity to combat this, using art and dialogue to ensure young people feel seen, included, and loved.
A Grand Finale and a New Legacy
The screening of the cartoon was received with great enthusiasm, but the impact went even further. Acclaimed photographer Nico Nardomarino was in attendance to capture the portraits of 15 students who volunteered to be the faces of the project’s next phase. These portraits, each accompanied by volunteerss' personal quote on compassion, will form an upcoming exhibition—both online and at the Carelli Institute.
The Voice of the Institution
The school's leadership praised the project for bridging the gap between academic learning and emotional maturity.
"This project has opened a window into the souls of our students," stated Dr. Flora Gesumina Marasciulo, School Principal. "The 'Invisible Fuel' is exactly what our youth need to navigate today's world. We are so impressed by the results that we have already invited Youmanity to return next year to continue this vital work."
Youmanity extends its deepest gratitude to Prof. Rosa Pepe, Lead for the prevention of bullying/cyberbullying, for her invaluable assistance during the group discussions and the production of the digital cartoon (below). Thanks to the parents of our student authors for their trust and collaboration. Last but not least, Dr. Flora Gesumina Marasciulo and Prof. Gaetana Seveso, respectively the School Principal and the Assistant to the Principal, at the "Falcone e Borsellino-Carelli" Institute, Conversano, Italy.
