The Invisible Fuel: Igniting Compassion in Schools
Under the title "The Invisible Fuel," this year’s initiative challenged students to look beyond simple friendship and explore the profound impact of empathy, active support, and the courage to stand up for others.
Once again, Youmanity is proud to deliver its signature interactive project to benefit secondary school students. Following the success of last year’s "Friend-Ship" project, the charity has returned to the classroom to explore a theme that sits at the very heart of human connection: Compassion.
Under the title "The Invisible Fuel," this year’s initiative challenged students to look beyond simple friendship and explore the profound impact of empathy, active support, and the courage to stand up for others.
A Community Effort
The success of such a delicate project relies on the trust and cooperation of the entire school community. Youmanity would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the parents of the participating students; their unanimous authorization allowed the group discussions to take place in an environment of openness and safety.
Special recognition is also due to the "Falcone e Borsellino-Carelli" Institute. We are immensely grateful to the Head of School, Dr. Flora Gesumina Marasciulo, and her dedicated teaching staff for their warm welcome and logistical support. Furthermore, we owe a debt of gratitude to Professor Rosa Pepe, the school’s point of reference for bullying and cyberbullying, whose expertise and guidance were instrumental in grounding the project’s themes in real-world resilience.
From Empathy to Action
While last year’s project focused on reclaiming the value of friendship, "The Invisible Fuel" takes these concepts a step further. It encourages students to recognize that compassion is not a passive feeling, but a "fuel" that drives us to act when we see others struggling or feeling invisible.
Led by Youmanity’s director, Angelo Iudice, the project involved workshops where students explored the "backpacks" we all carry—the hidden burdens of social isolation or digital rumors—and how compassion means choosing to walk at someone else’s pace rather than running ahead.
A Creative Collaboration
The culmination of these workshops is a digital cartoon, co-authored by a team of 20 dedicated students. The students took a hands-on approach to the narrative, refining a script that uses the metaphor of light and dark to illustrate how one person’s strength can brighten someone else's world. The animation is set against the backdrop of Conversano, featuring local landmarks such as the Giardino Garibaldi and Largo della Corte.
A Lasting Impact
"The Invisible Fuel" has allowed students to develop a "toolkit" for emotional intelligence. By identifying compassion as a strength rather than a weakness, the project empowers students to stop harmful behaviors in chat groups and support those who feel left behind.
As the script concludes: "The brightest light isn’t the sun. It’s the light we turn on for one another."
