A Day to remember the suffering of children
The United Nation International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is marked globally on 4th June every year.
The purpose of this special day is to bring into focus the pain suffered by children who are often the victims of physical, mental and emotional abuse all over the world.
Data from both the UN and the Word Health Organisation describe alarming situations:
more than two million children killed in conflict in the last two decades,
about 10 million children refugees cared for by the UN Refugee Agency,
up to 275 million witness domestic abuse annually,
250,000 child soldiers in the world (40 per cent of soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo are children),
1.8 million are involved in prostitution or pornography and 1.2 million have been trafficked,
up to 275 million witness domestic abuse annually.
According to Save the Children, the worst countries for growing up children are DR Congo, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Niger, Central Africa Republic, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Uganda.
Several organizations world wide take part in campaigns to help protect children’s rights - Save the Children and Global Movement for Children among them.
