Failed by the system
30 August 2021
We report on a sensitive article by the BBC on how autistic people are being left to "fall through the cracks" by health and social care services.
19-year old Will Melbourne was one of them. Before completing suicide he posted a video online to help others navigate a system that is "not fit for purpose”.
Analysis work carried out by the Health Foundation for the BBC reveals that only 10% of social care staff have had any training in how to support people with autism.
And the National Autistic Society say more than 300,000 people are not getting their needs met by their local social services.
Watch this brief BBC film by producer Ruth Clegg to learn more about Will Melbourne - ’t"he young man with an incredible mind".
