Youmanity reports on an important organisation promoting much needed positive social change: PhotoVoice.
The London-based charity's main mission is to deliver innovative and participatory photography projects. By working in partnership with organisations, communities, and individuals worldwide, PhotoVoice helps to build the skills of underrepresented or at risk communities by creating new tools of self-advocacy and communication.
As demonstrated by Youmanity's own preferred medium of communication, photography is able to cross cultural and linguistic barriers and can be adapted to countless objectives. Communication using photography is immediate and very effective. Its power lies in its dual role as both art form and way to record facts.
Photography also provides an accessible way to describe realities, communicate perspectives, raise awareness of social issues, generating dialogue and discussion.
PhotoVoice's pioneering and award winning approach brings together arts, media, development, campaigning, and social change to deliver projects that enable voice, build skills, deliver advocacy and work towards sustainable change.
PhotoVoice have been in involved in some ground-breaking project, from tackling the importance of social inclusion to providing practical help for child sexual exploitation victims. You can see some of the PhotoVoice amazing projects HERE
