OPAAL - amazing charity work
We have recently learned of the amazing work delivered by OPAAL, the Older People’s Advocacy Alliance.
Their innovative project began in July 2012 when OPAAL recruited older people affected by cancer who would provide indispensable support for their peers affected by the same illness.
Between July 2012 and March 2014 OPAAL trained 56 peer advocates who in turn provided independent advocacy support to 174 older people affected by cancer. The charity also recruited 62 older people affected by cancer as National and Local Cancer Champions, these people are now very influential helping OPAAL shape and guide vital projects.
On 25th March 2014 they published their very first book ‘Every Step of the Way“: 13 stories illustrating the difference independent advocacy support makes to older people affected by cancer. Click here to find out how to download or order your FREE copy.
From May 1st 2014 thanks to continuing support from BIG Lottery Fund and MacMillan Cancer Support, the project expanded to include nine delivery partners across England and for the first time one in Wales. You can learn more about OPAAL by following their blog HERE
