Friend-Ship Joins World Mental Health Day
It is our pleasure to announce that Youmanity will contribute to this year's World Mental Health Day (WMHD) with the images from the Friend-Ship photographic collection. These are portraits of everyday Londoners to whom our photogrpahers asked what friendship meant to them. Their statemements and photographs will be showcased at City Hall on 10th Oct. Also showcased at WMHD will be our Friend-Ship film (below)!
Our Friend-Ship campaign would like to help reclaim the place and value of friendship to fight social isolation and complement the huge work accomplished by Thrive LDN for WMHD. This annual event has been going from strength to strength ever since its inception in 1992. The Mayor of London together with Thrive LDN have been delivering some innovative projects to help remove the stigma associated with mental health. Their attention is focused on young people. This is why:
- 50% of mental health problems are manifested by the age of 14 and 75% are established by the age of 21.
- Three children in every school class have poor mental health.
- Young people from poorer backgrounds are three times more likely to have poor mental health than those from more affluent backgrounds.
- Childhood adversity has been shown to account for around a third of future mental health problems.
- Some groups of young people face particular challenges – 44% of young LGBT people have considered suicide compared to 26% of heterosexual non-trans young people.
A big thank you to the THRIVE LDN team for including Youmanity in this complex festival. A special thank to the World Metnal Health team project managers, Lise Hansen and Priscila Hernandez, for their kind cooperation.
